Not-for-profit aged care provider Life Care has appointed Mossop Construction + Interior to build stage two of its $47 million new South Australian seniors housing concept in Joslin.

A sod-turning ceremony for Gaynes Park Suites will be held at 1pm on Friday 11 October with Federal Member for Sturt, Mr James Stevens MP, Life Care’s CEO Allen Candy and Chairman John Stock, and Mossop Managing Director Neil Mossop, ahead of construction starting later this month.

The development is based on the success of the ‘assisted living’ concept in the United Kingdom, United States and Canada. It allows those in their 70s and 80s to downsize their living environment while receiving support tailored to residents’ immediate and future needs.

Gaynes Park Suites will comprise 41 single and two-bedroom assisted living suites and include a concierge, communal dining and lounge areas, a library, multipurpose rooms, consulting rooms for visiting specialists and services providers, and landscaped gardens.

Residents will be able to live with a level of independence, drawing on a range of support services from housekeeping and meals to personal care and nursing/medication support. They will also access a range of health and wellbeing programs on-site and via Life Care Active located opposite, to encourage social interaction and physical activity to support overall wellness.

Life Care CEO Allen Candy said the development showed the not-for-profit’s commitment to applying international best practice living and care to benefit older South Australians.

“We are embarking on a strategy to create communities that combine accommodation and care with leading-edge health and wellbeing programs that help older people age well,” said Mr Candy.

“Gaynes Park Suites will help residents gain a sense of connection with their peers and the wider community, while accessing the support and care they need as they age.

“This development will also help meet the rising demand for suitable seniors housing in the east, where the ageing population is expected to create a demand for between 700 to 1100 dwellings within the decade.”

Construction is expected to be complete by late 2020, with approximately 80 jobs to be created during construction. Once operational, Gaynes Park Suites will employ approximately 12 FTE employees.

Gaynes Park Suites will be built alongside Life Care’s existing 96-bed internationally recognised residential care facility, Gaynes Park Manor, at the corner of Payneham Road and Lambert Road in Joslin.

Gaynes Park Manor is the first in the Southern Hemisphere to earn Gold Standard Accreditation from the world-renowned Dementia Services Development Centre at Stirling University in the United Kingdom. The Gold Standard recognises the evidence-based approach to dementia design excellence featured at Gaynes Park Manor.

Life Care has also lodged plans for a $60 million seniors living community in Golden Grove.

Subject to planning approval, the development will include 38 apartments for retirees, 42 assisted living suites, 46 independent living units, and a central hub featuring a café, common areas, and consulting rooms for visiting specialists and service providers.

Construction would start in the second half of 2020 and take approximately three years to complete.

Life Care is a not-for-profit provider of aged care services spanning independent living, home care, respite and full-time residential aged care. These services are offered across nine locations, from Aldinga Beach to Christie Downs, Reynella, Mitchell Park, Everard Park, Glen Osmand, Joslin, Modbury and Balaklava.

The Unley-based organisation employs more than 800 staff, supported by 170 volunteers, and in 2020 will celebrate 70 years of delivering care to older South Australians.
